童子 Tongzi figurine

Chinese figurine of a boy (童子)holding a peach. In Chinese folklore, a peach symbolizes longevity. According to Taoist mythology, the peach of immortality grew in the garden of Hsi Wang Mu (西王母), the Queen Mother of the West and ripens every 3000 years.
This piece was made in Jingdezhen, which is known as the “Porcelain Capital” of China. Jingdezhen may have produced pottery as early as the sixth century CE. It had become the largest centre of production of Chinese porcelain by the 14th century, with official kilns controlled by the emperor in the Mind dynasty onwards, producing imperial porcelain for the court. Today, Jingdezhen still remains as the place to produce the finest quality of porcelain ware.
